The Tia Imani Hanna Project is made up of three musicians: Carolyn Koebel, percussionist, Elden Kelly, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, and Tia Imani Hanna, violinist, vocalist, and composer. We share an interest in improvisation, in creating music that lives in the moment, in sharing a sacred space with music, and sharing those moments with our audiences.
We discovered our common musical interests while rehearsing for some performances. These interests were defined in the spaces between the songs. This creative space became the music itself- a place where we really connected. We have a lot of textural sounds among us, with Carolyn playing several kinds of percussion instruments, including kalimba, Cajon, cymbals, sheep toes, prepared dulcimer, and even a bedpan and Elden playing on the Turkish cumbush ( pronounced joon-boosh - This is a Turkish banjo), and the glissantar ( a fretless guitar with six strings). He sings too. I play the violin, and can also be heard as a vocalist and vocal percussionist. this crowd-funded album is a triumph of collective community collaboration and astounding improvisations.
